Artist Statement:

These works utilize the philodendron as a subject matter. The philodendron is the most showy tropical leaf! I am always amazed seeing plants that are houseplants at home growing in the ground in tropical climates. I love the linear feel to the leaf shape, the edges of the leaves are a wonderful balance of positive and negative shapes. There is also a slightly sinister side to a leaf that can be as big as a person that I try to convey with some these works. The two dimensional images are a mix of monotypes, linocuts, and collagraphs, made by gluing paper cutouts to cardboard and inking the resulting printing plate.

Dixie Laws received her BA from UC Davis and MA from California State University, Sacramento. She has been a teacher and was a consultant for the Art in Public Places at the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. She has worked primarily on large scale linocuts for the last 15 years.
Her work emphasizes the outdoor environment. Pattern and the grid are recurring themes in her work. She is affiliated with Axis Gallery and is a founding member of Myrtle Press in Sacramento.
